All Are Welcome!

The banner says it all.  First United is commited to being a place where all are welcome – regardless of where you are on your spiritual journey. First United is also commited to being a voice for radical inclusivity and justice.

This Sunday our banner will be carried in the procession at an historic event. We will not be worshipping in our usual place or at our usual time. This Sunday First United (people and banner) will be out in full force at the Rite of Reception/ Reinstatement when the ELM 7 (7 undocumented GLBT pastors) will be received/reinstated in the ELCA.

First United has a direct connection to this event, as Pastor Jeff Johnson, from University Lutheran Chapel in Berkeley, is one of those being received. First United called Pastor Jeff in 1989, which resulted in our being expelled from the denomination.

I feel so privileged to be part of First United’s story and for the opportunity to take part in this celebration. No matter what the future holds for First United as we discern our response to the policy change, it is very gratifying to see the church take steps to live into a future where all are truly welcome.
